Is Your Car Ready for Summer?

Florida’s heat, dust, and traffic can take a toll on your vehicle.  Heat expands the air in tires and makes your cooling system work harder and harsh sun can accelerate wear on hoses and drive belts. However, with proper maintenance, you can minimize the toll that heat and sun take on your car.

Check out these simple measures you can take to better prepare your car for the summer driving season:

Check Your Air Conditioning

A working AC is a necessity during Florida’s scalding hot summer months. Ensure that your running properly by checking your car’s ac filter. If it doesn’t feel as cool as it once did, you may need to call National Transmissions & Auto Care Centers for an evaluation.

Maintain Your Cooling System

The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. Your car’s cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months.

A blockage in air flow can lead to overheating. Be sure to check that there is no debris around the radiator. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. Your radiator’s coolant and water mixture should be 50:50.

Tip: For those taking the DIY approach to auto care, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled down. The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by your ASE Certified Technician at National Transmissions & Auto Care Centers.

Inspect Your Windshield Wipers

When it comes to summers in Florida, rainy weather is inevitable. It’s important that you make sure your car’s windshield wipers are in good shape.

Rubber tends to be susceptible to higher temperatures, so check to see if your blades aren’t worn down or checked for cracks. If they are, it’s time for a replacement. Don’t forget to make sure you have enough windshield wiper fluid, too!

Monitor Your Tire Pressure

Check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Use a tire gauge to monitor your car’s tire pressure. Pressure tends to rise in higher temperatures during the day, so make sure to inspect your tires after they’ve cooled down and after the sun sets. Remember to have your tired rotated ever 5,000 miles.
