5 Easy Tips for Better Gas Mileage

With the average price of gas dropping below two dollars per gallon since 2009, motorists have been seeing real savings at the pump. Whether you drive a hybrid or a three-ton SUV, gas-friendly driving habits, known as hypermiling, can help you achieve up to 40 percent more miles per gallon than your vehicle’s fuel economy estimate.

Learning how to save fuel and improve your gas mileage can benefit both your wallet and your vehicle’s performance. Before you hit the road, check out these five easy tips for hypermiling:

Check Tire Pressure

Did you know that ever pound-per-square-inch that a tire is under inflated results in a six percent loss in fuel efficiency? Under inflated tires are one of the most common causes of poor gas mileage.

Under-inflated tires have more rolling resistance, which makes your engine work harder to keep the wheels moving. Remember to check your tires at least once a month for maximum fuel efficiency.

Don’t Accelerate

If you accelerate to speed then have to brake immediately, you’re wasting fuel.

If you drive an automatic car, accelerate in moderation so the transmission can shift up into higher gear. For stick-shifters, shift early to keep the revs down, and downshift if you need to accelerate.

Avoid Aggressive Driving

Excessive speeding, rapid acceleration, and braking can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.

Remember to always go the speed limit. Not only is it safer, but gas mileage typically decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour. Speed increases wind resistance, which ultimately reduces gas mileage.

Keep Track of Your Fuel Economy

Routinely monitor your vehicle’s fuel economy by noting the odometer reading and the number of gallons purchased each time you fill up your gas tank. To calculate your gas mileage, divide the number of miles traveled between refills by the number of gallons purchased. Your driving habits are a direct reflection of fuel efficiency.

Tip to remember: Gas is cooler and denser in the morning. Since gas is measured in volumes and not density, filling up your gas tank in the morning means you’ll get more for your money!

Maintain Your Engine

Keeping your engine properly tuned can improve gas mileage by any an average of four percent. Fixing a serious maintenance problem can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.  Simple maintenance such as regular oil changes, air filter changes, and spark plug replacements will lengthen the life of your engine, improve fuel economy and minimize emissions.
